摘   要

In recent years, the scientific Python ecosystem has matured to the point of being a credible alternative to popular proprietary tools for numerical and scientific computing. Python is an open source, high level language that allows for interactive exploration as well as large-scale programming with a number of approaches (procedural, functional, object-oriented).

I will describe the evolution of Python for scientific work since the early 2000s, highlighting where the strengths of the language enable better research. I will also provide an overview of the current state of the art in scientific Python: new tools have emerged adapted to the recent rise of data-driven discovery, with excellent libraries for statistical data description and analysis, machine learning and the study of complex networks.

I will also touch upon the impact the open source culture that scientific Python draws upon is having on science itself. We are seeing rising awareness for improved reproducibility of our research and better access to our outocmes; the tools and practices of the open source community can inform how science responds to these challenges.

講者簡介:

Fernando Perez 目前是 UC Berkeley 的研究員,研究結合使用開放工具的高階科學計算及腦部影像。他在 2001年就讀 CU Boulder 物理研究所時, 創建了 IPython 計畫。他帶領一個優秀(且努力)的團隊,持續開發 IPython,橋接電腦後的數字與鍵盤前的人。

他是 NumFOCUS 的創始會員與 PSF 會員。由於  IPython 及對於科學 Python 的貢獻,得到了 2012 年 Advancement of Free Software 獎項。 他也是在 2013 年創建的 Berkeley Institute for Data Science 的創始研究員。
