摘 要

We live in a world of models. In fact, we have been so used to many daily lives, which are indeed models, but we mistakenly think the models are natural themselves. They are not. For example, the calendar is not nature. It is just a model for us to explain the nature. In the calendar (model), we use the term "year" to call, roughly, a full round of a revolution of the earth around the sun; and then divide a year into seasons and months; and into the dates and the time. The calendar is certainly not the nature itself though. Models are subject to change whenever they become inaccurate or whenever we change the way we understand the world. As such, some radical mathematicians claim that " Every model is wrong."  In this mini-course, I will first give some general senses about the mathematical models for the hope that we can properly use models, rather than believe in models. Then, we will see how to model the world in linear programming. There will be as many concrete examples as possible, from the beginning of the whole story the Diet Problem, to data classification (the support vector machine), the packing problems, the production scheduling problem, the maximum-flow/minimum cut network problems, and finally a set-covering problem with a real world large scale applications. We will encounter tricky modeling skills, mathematical technique as well as computer simulations to make all those things solved. We hope, after three hours, you can bring back a good idea and understanding about linear programming, plus its engagement with the world.
